Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation Services is the collective title given to 6 professional groups:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Speech and Language Therapy

AHPs work with people of all ages in a range of surroundings including hospitals, people’s homes, clinics, surgeries and schools. Their particular skills and expertise help people to:

  • recover movement or mobility.
  • improve nutritional status.
  • develop communication skills.
  • restore confidence in everyday living skills.

Allied health professionals have to be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). The HPC is an independent, UK wide regulatory body responsible for protecting the public by setting and maintaining standards of professional training, performance and conduct of the healthcare professions it regulates.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function to as near normal as possible when someone is affected by injury, illness or by developmental or other disability. Physiotherapists combine their knowledge, skills and approach to improve a broad range of physical problems associated with different ´systems´ of the body. In particular they treat neuromuscular (brain and nervous system), musculoskeletal (soft tissues, joints and bones), cardiovascular and respiratory systems (heart and lungs and associated physiology)

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps to restore the maximum degree of independence to people of all ages who have suffered illness, injury or mental health problem and where capacity to live normally within their own home has been impaired in various ways. The work is varied and can involve helping people to learn new ways of doing things, assessing needs, providing equipment and giving advice

Podiatry

Podiatrists assess, diagnose and treat people with feet, ankles and lower limbs problems. They aim to improve mobility, independence and quality of life for their patients.

Nutrition and Dietetics

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are the only qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems at an individual and wider public health level. Uniquely, dietitians use the most up to date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease, which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

Speech and Language

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) work with children and adults who have difficulties with speech, language and communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

They provide assessment, diagnosis and management of the following:

  • mild, moderate or severe learning difficulties physical disabilities
  • Speech and language delay or impairment
  • hearing impairment
  • cleft palate
  • stammering
  • voice disorders
  • eating and swallowing and/or communication problems following eg stroke, Cancer or Parkinson´s disease
  • developmental feeding disorder.
